Paddle the Uwharries

Paddle the Uwharrie River and you’ll experience one of the last truly unspoiled waterways in North Carolina. Whether it’s a half-day, daylong or overnight paddle, you’ll find the river much the same as Native Americans saw it thousands of years ago.

Access on the river can be a challenge. The easiest is at Low Water Bridge. From there, it’s about six miles to the NC109 bridge, where the access is steep and rocky. Another 3 miles down brings paddlers to Thousand Bale Bottom off of Cottonplace Road. Another six river miles brings paddlers to Lake Tillery where you can paddle across to exit the water at the Morrow Mountain State Park boat ramp.

Experienced paddlers know that heavy rains can change the Uwharrie from a gentle beginner's stream to a swift-water hazard. Paddlers may camp along the river where it runs through the National Forest.

The lakes offer many paddling opportunities.
